Derby Combined Court Centre: Location & History

The Derby Combined Court Centre was officially opened on 17 May 1989 by the Lord Chief Justice, Lord Lane. Designed by the Property Services Agency in a modernist style, the building is constructed in red brick and was built at a cost of £7.4 million. The Morledge site has its own industrial heritage: it was formerly occupied by a lead foundry run by Cox, Poyser and Company, whose 150-foot shot tower was a prominent Derby landmark before it was demolished and replaced with a covered market in 1932. Before the new court centre opened, criminal hearings in Derby were held at the County Hall on St Mary's Gate, which could no longer cope with the growing caseload in the area.
