About Luton Crown Court
The current courthouse on George Street was designed by the Property Services Agency in the Modernist style, built in buff brick at a cost of around £10 million, and officially opened in April 1992 after replacing two former shop units on the historic "Market Hill" site. Before its construction, serious Bedfordshire crown court business was heard at the Shire Hall in Bedford, but rising case volumes in Luton made a dedicated venue essential. Today the building houses jury deliberation suites, secure custody facilities linked to the cells below, and prison-to-court video link rooms used for remand and sentence hearings involving HMP Bedford and HMP The Mount.
