Norwich Crown Court forms part of the Norwich Combined Court Centre, one of the busiest judicial venues in East Anglia. It deals with the most serious criminal matters committed for trial or sentence from magistrates’ courts across Norfolk and parts of north Suffolk, including indictable-only offences such as murder, manslaughter, rape, serious sexual offences, large-scale drug supply, armed robbery, fraud, and complex historical abuse cases. The court also hears appeals against conviction and sentence from Norwich Magistrates’ Court and surrounding magistrates’ courts.
Norwich Crown Court is housed within The Law Courts on Bishopgate, a striking modern complex completed in 1988 that sits on the banks of the River Wensum, just a short walk from Norwich Cathedral and the medieval Cow Tower. The building consolidated criminal, civil and family jurisdictions under one roof, replacing the city's earlier Shirehall court venue near Norwich Castle, which had served as the city's main criminal court for over a century. Today, the Combined Court Centre operates multiple courtrooms used flexibly for Crown Court trials, civil claims, family proceedings and adoption matters.
The Law Courts on Bishopgate are easily accessible by rail, bus, bicycle and on foot. Norwich Railway Station is approximately a 10-minute walk away, with direct services from London Liverpool Street, Cambridge, Ipswich, Peterborough and Great Yarmouth. Several First Eastern Counties and Konectbus services stop on nearby Tombland and Whitefriars, while the Norwich Park & Ride network connects the city centre with Costessey, Postwick, Sprowston, Thickthorn, Airport and Harford sites.
There is no on-site public parking at the court, but paid parking is available within 500 metres at St Helen’s Wharf (17 Bishopgate, NR3 1RZ) and Magdalen Car Park (St Saviours Lane, NR3 1SP). Two on-site spaces are reserved for Blue Badge holders and must be booked in advance by contacting the court. Cycle racks are available outside the building.
