Doncaster Crown Court Location & History

The courts on College Road form part of the wider Waterdale civic quarter, developed from the late 1940s as Doncaster's new administrative centre. The architect Frederick Gibberd was appointed in 1955 to oversee the masterplan for the area, and his Police Station and Law Courts complex opened in 1969, bringing a bold modernist presence to the town. Until then, court hearings in Doncaster had been held in older municipal premises. The Waterdale complex originally comprised two buildings on either side of College Road: the Crown Court to the south and the magistrates' court to the north.

In October 2023, Doncaster Justice Centre North — the 1960s-built magistrates' court — was closed after the discovery of Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) within its structure. In February 2026, HM Courts and Tribunals Service confirmed the building would not reopen, making the closure permanent. Since then, magistrates' hearings have been redistributed to Doncaster Justice Centre South, Sheffield Magistrates' Court, Sheffield Combined Court and Barnsley Law Court, as well as remote hearings. Crown Court work continues at Justice Centre South on College Road.
