Designed by the Building Design Partnership in red brick with stone dressings and built at a cost of £11.3 million, the Combined Court Centre was officially opened by Lord Chancellor Lord Mackay of Clashfern on 18 October 1991. Before this purpose-built venue opened, all criminal hearings in the city were heard at Hull Guildhall. Today the courthouse handles indictable and triable-either-way criminal matters committed from the Hull and Holderness Magistrates' Court, as well as appeals against magistrates' decisions.
The court is a five-minute walk from Hull Paragon Interchange, the city's combined rail and bus station, with direct trains from London King's Cross, Leeds, Sheffield, York and Doncaster. Drivers approaching via the A63 Castle Street can use the Princes Quay or Pier Street car parks, both within easy walking distance of Lowgate. The Humber Bridge connects Hull to North Lincolnshire via the A15.
