About Exeter Crown Court

Exeter Crown Court operates from the Exeter Law Courts, a modern combined court centre at Southernhay Gardens, Exeter EX1 1UH. The building was designed by Jacobs Babtie in the Modernist style, constructed by Sir Robert McAlpine under a Private Finance Initiative contract, and completed in 2004 at a cost of £20 million. It houses six courtrooms and replaced the historic law courts at Exeter Castle (Rougemont Castle), which had served the city's judicial needs since a purpose-built courthouse was erected there in 1774 for the Devon Assizes.

The Southernhay Gardens site itself has a rich institutional history — it previously formed part of the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital grounds, which relocated to Wonford in 1974. The Lord Chancellor's Department selected the site in the early 2000s for redevelopment into a state-of-the-art judicial facility, transforming it into a key civic and legal hub in central Exeter.
