About Swansea Crown Court
Swansea Crown Court is located at The Law Courts, St Helen's Road, Swansea, SA1 4PF. The courthouse was purpose-built in 1988 to replace the former hearing facilities in the west wing of Swansea Guildhall, which could no longer cope with the growing volume of criminal cases across south-west Wales. Designed by Welsh architect Sir Alex Gordon in a neoclassical style, the building originally contained three courtrooms but has since expanded and now operates up to 12 courtrooms during busy sitting periods. The custodial facilities within the building underwent a major refurbishment in 2013.
Types of Cases Heard
As a Crown Court centre, Swansea handles serious criminal matters that fall beyond the jurisdiction of the Swansea Magistrates' Court. The types of cases regularly heard here include murder, manslaughter, serious sexual offences, armed robbery, large-scale drug trafficking, fraud, grievous bodily harm, and arson. The court also hears either-way offences referred up from magistrates' courts across the region and appeals against conviction or sentence from local magistrates. All Crown Court trials are conducted before a judge and jury.
