About Carlisle Crown Court
Carlisle Crown Court forms part of HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS) and falls within the Northern Circuit. The Courts of Justice building was designed by architects Napper Collerton in a striking Modernist style — built in red brick with stone dressings at a cost of £9.3 million and opened in 1992. The symmetrical south-facing frontage features projecting pavilions, a central revolving-door bay topped by a large arched window, an oculus on the second floor and the Royal Coat of Arms in the gable above. Internally the building houses five courtrooms shared between the Crown Court and Carlisle County Court. Before 1992, criminal hearings in the city were held inside the historic Carlisle Citadel by the railway station.
