Housed in a Grade II* listed Portland stone building designed by architect John Johnson and completed in 1812, the courthouse — long known locally as the "County Hall" — also served as the headquarters of East Sussex County Council from 1889 to 1938. Today it operates as a combined venue, sharing the building with Lewes County Court, and acts as the lead Crown Court for Sussex with Chichester Crown Court functioning as its satellite site for overflow trials.
