History of Salisbury Law Courts
Salisbury has a long judicial history stretching back centuries. Magistrates' court hearings were originally held in the west wing of the historic Salisbury Guildhall in the city centre. As the volume of cases grew through the twentieth century, additional facilities for the Crown Court and County Court were established at Alexandra House on St John's Street during the mid-1980s. However, these premises eventually proved insufficient for the demands placed upon them. In 2003, the Lord Chancellor's Department selected a site on the north side of Wilton Road — formerly the recreation ground of the Old Manor Hospital — for a purpose-built modern courthouse. Construction began in October 2007, and the current Salisbury Law Courts building opened in 2009. Designed by architects Stride Treglown and Feilden & Mawson in a contemporary modernist style, and built by Mansell Construction, the courthouse now accommodates the Crown Court, County Court and Magistrates' Court under one roof.
