History of Truro Crown Court
Truro Crown Court was built between 1986 and 1988 on the site of the medieval Truro Castle, which had later been used as a cattle market from around 1840. Before the courthouse was constructed, serious criminal cases in Cornwall were heard at the Shire Hall in Bodmin. The building was designed by architects Eldred Evans and David Shalev in a modernist style, with grey rendered walls and a distinctive pedimented entrance portico that draws on classical influences. Construction cost £4.9 million and the completed building won the RIBA Building of the Year award, a predecessor to the Stirling Prize. In April 2018, Truro Crown Court was designated a Grade II* listed building by Historic England in recognition of its outstanding architectural significance — making it one of the youngest buildings in England to receive such a high level of protection.
