History of Snaresbrook Crown Court

The Grade II listed building that houses Snaresbrook Crown Court has a remarkable history dating back to 1843. Originally constructed between 1841 and 1843 as the Wanstead Infant Orphan Asylum, the building was designed by renowned Victorian architects Sir George Gilbert Scott and William Bonython Moffatt in a distinctive Jacobean Gothic style. The orphanage was founded by the philanthropist Andrew Reed and once housed around 400 orphaned children, serving as an important social institution throughout the Victorian era. In 1938, the institution was renamed the Royal Wanstead School and continued as an educational establishment until 1971. The British government then acquired the building and converted it into a Crown Court at a cost of £1.6 million, with the court officially opening on 26 November 1974 following work by architects Mayell, Hart and Partners. A further annex was added in 1988 at a cost of £3 million to accommodate additional courtrooms. The court sits within 18 acres of landscaped grounds that include Eagle Pond, a scenic lake adjacent to the main building.
