History of the Wood Green Court Building

The building at Woodall House has a rich and varied history dating back to the mid-nineteenth century. The site was originally occupied by Lordship Lodge, a private mansion set within 10 acres of grounds and owned by the Limehouse shipbuilder Joseph Fletcher. After Fletcher's death in 1852, the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys purchased the property and opened a school there in 1857, initially accommodating 70 pupils. By 1865, the original lodge had been demolished and replaced with the striking Gothic Revival building designed by architects Edwin Pearce and J. B. Wilson & Son, expanding capacity to 200 boys. The school relocated to Bushey, Hertfordshire, in 1898, and the site was subsequently sold to the Home and Colonial School Society, which ran a training college for schoolmistresses from 1904 until 1930. The Tottenham District Gas Company then acquired the building, renaming it Woodall House after its chairman, Sir Colbert Woodall. Eastern Gas occupied the premises until 1974, when Haringey Council took over and converted the building into the Wood Green Crown Court and Remand Centre.

Getting to Wood Green Crown Court

The court is well served by public transport. The nearest London Underground station is Wood Green on the Piccadilly line, located approximately 350 metres southwest of the court building. Turnpike Lane station, also on the Piccadilly line, is a short walk to the south. Several bus routes stop directly outside the court at the "Wood Green Crown Court" bus stop on Lordship Lane. For those travelling by car, limited on-street parking is available in the surrounding residential roads, though public transport is strongly recommended given the urban location and controlled parking zones in the Haringey area.

Wood Green Crown Court provides level access at the building entrance and throughout its courtrooms, making it accessible for wheelchair users. An on-site canteen serves hot and cold food and drinks to the public, witnesses, jurors, and legal professionals. Interview rooms are available outside each courtroom, and a children's waiting room with baby changing facilities is located on the ground floor opposite Courtroom 1. Video conferencing and prison-to-court video link facilities are available by prior arrangement, and a portable hearing enhancement system can be requested in advance.
